Autonomy’s renaissance

The problem with staring at the horizon is that it becomes easy to trip. The UK software darling Autonomy has undoubted potential. It is the market leader in “unstructured search" – clever software that can grasp context and identify relationships across a variety of files, from e-mail and spreadsheets to audio and video. It can listen to call centre conversations, for example, and suggest actions to staff as they speak, cutting down on training needs. Duplication of effort can be avoided in large and disparate organisations. Productivity gains as yet undiscovered lie in wait for businesses who can better exploit information not gathered up into neat databases.

So the grand hope is that Autonomy's technology will become embedded into the very infrastructure of business software.

Price, Canadiens take on Sharks

Montreal, which is 20-9-4 on the road this year, will also visit Phoenix, Los Angeles and Anaheim over the next week.

San Jose picked up some goaltending depth at the trade deadline, signing Brian Boucher to a one-year contract last Tuesday, and the netminder made his Sharks debut on Saturday.

Boucher stopped 24 shots in a 2-0 victory over St. Louis for his 14th career shutout. Boucher had been playing for the Philadelphia Phantoms, the American Hockey League affiliate of the Flyers, and hadn't played a game in the NHL since March 30 of last season with Columbus.

Starting netminder Evgeni Nabokov has played in all but three of San Jose's games this year, and is tied for the league lead in wins with 35.

Joe Pavelski and Mike Grier scored for the Sharks, who won their season-high fifth straight game.

The world applauds Kenya’s deal

To help the new government to its feet, British Prime Minister Mr Gordon Brown said he would sponsor a donor summit to provide aid to Kenya.

"Wed be prepared in London to host a donors conference to make sure Kenya has the best chance to build upon this power-sharing agreement, to restore tourism (and) get the economy moving again," he told reporters in London, after speaking to Annan on telephone.

EU Commissioner for Development Louis Michel, on behalf of the EU Presidency, said, "EU commends the work of the Panel of Eminent Personalities led by the former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan whose determination was crucial in the difficult task of reaching this agreement."

The EU, he sadded, "has strongly supported the political dialogue under the auspices of Annan and will continue to do so throughout the process.

First Look: Mini series follow-up: More RAM

Through Macworld's Peter Cohen, I was able to get a beta build for some basic comparison testing. The results were impressive, and I've been given the OK to share some basic results.

JK2 includes a built-in benchmarking tool; this page at Inside Mac Games explains how to set it up, as it's far from obvious. I ran the benchmark on all three machines, at 1024x768 resolution with the default settings for all the other options, and EAX audio disabled. First, the non-Universal results:

Intel Core Duo mini: 30fps PowerBook G4 1.33GHz: 52fps Dual G5: 112fps

Even in Rosetta mode, JK2 runs quite well, scoring an average of 30fps. With that result, however, comes a caveat. I also recorded 30fps when testing in Rosetta at 800x600 and 640x480, which makes no sense whatsoever.

PORTLAND, Maine, Feb. 10 (UPI) -- Barack Obama Sunday appeared to be heading to a weekend sweep of Democratic presidential nominating contests over rival Hillary Clinton.

The senator from Illinois was leading his colleague from New York 58 percent to 42 percent, with 59 percent of the state's caucuses reporting, the Portland Press Herald reported.

Despite a snow storm, more than 27,000 Maine Democrats made their way to caucuses. About 17,000 Maine Democrats caucused in 2004, the newspaper said.

"I'm surprised the turnout is this high," said Arden Manning, executive director of the Maine Democratic party.

The high turnout was causing long delays in some areas and final results were not expected until 11 p.m. EST.

Obama and Clinton are running a close race in the campaign for the Democratic nomination.

Joe Girardi managed to sink, swim with Marlins

There were 45 of so players sitting in the Marlins' spring-training clubhouse when Joe Girardi held his first meeting as a manager. Florida's payroll had been slashed, some of their best players traded away and some of the kids were so green they didn't know they didn't have to carry their own luggage.

This peach-fuzz brigade gaped at the serious new manager with a crew cut and believed he'd tell them to expect a rough season. But the first thing Girardi told his charges was this, according to Mike Harkey, Girardi's former Cub teammate who was his bullpen coach:

"Don't make the same mistake everyone else is and think that we're going to lose 100 games this season. Our goal is to win the World Series."

The Series? With that group? What a laugh. But, Harkey says, "That set the tone for those kids, that he wasn't going to settle for anything and the kids really felt that."

Girardi's 2006 Marlins, the cheapest (a payroll of about $15 million) and youngest team in baseball, stayed in contention for the National League wild card until mid-September, even after starting the season 11-31.

Pecatonica's 'geezer' to race up Empire State Building

At age 63, Bill Law's kids have declared him an official geezer.

That won't stop him from toeing the starting line Tuesday for the invitation-only 31st annual Empire State Building Run-Up, an event open only to elite vertical racers from around the world.

The run up the New York landmark's 1,576 steps will be his eighth stair-climbing race since the geezer declaration on his 60th birthday.

"I'm in it and I couldn't be more excited," said Law, a Federal Aviation Administration air carrier inspector. "I've been trying to get into it for a couple of years now."

Acceptance to the Empire State Building race requires credentials, and Law figures his were validated in Chicago last February when he won the 60-64 age group in the 1,636-step Hustle up the Hancock in 15 minutes, 5 seconds.
