Crackdown on rowdy drinkers

You can't have it both ways, if you don;t want people smoking inside then you have to let them smoke outside.

I still think the police should be concentrating on more serious matters, like solving crime perhaps, not telling people to be quiet.

Watch out Edinburgh, we'll soon become a laughing stock!!! if we're not already!

Hot-rod movies – offshoot of custom-car craze

Probably not, to judge from the long-running parallels between custom cars and Hollywoods more sensational extremes. These often are forced onto a collision course by an increasingly fast-and-loud pop-music industry and the popular desire to see automobiles jazzed up beyond their factory-fresh appearance.

The interest still surfaces, notably in Universal Pictures The Fast and the Furious series of 2001 and onward, with a third sequel in preparation for 2009. But custom-car movie buffs with long memories are likelier to associate that title with 1955s original The Fast and the Furious an outcropping of a much larger craze.

The hot-rod movie backfire might be traced as distantly as 1947s The Devil on Wheels a purported moral-lesson picture, wallowing in the excesses of antisocial misconduct that it professes to condemn.

1st Stage New Works Festival at Florida Stage to feature Marsha Norman ...

Now a mature playwright, she's revisited the script at Florida Stage's urging. Mastrosimone's, Ramirez's and Christopher McGovern's scripts are newly written.

The festival debuted last year, when Florida Stage consolidated the new-play readings it had scattered throughout the year into a single event. "We learned that there was a really electric response to the idea of the chorus of voices a new play festival represents," said Louis Tyrrell, the theater's producing director.

The focus of the festival is on the playwright, said Javier Chacin, Florida Stage's artistic associate and the festival's coordinator. "This is an opportunity to help them develop their plays," he said. "We're here to help in whatever way the playwright wants."

The audience pitches in, too, because its feedback lets playwrights know whether their words are hitting home.

Buffett Rescinds Bond Insurer Bailout

The Oracle of Omaha has put away his cape and tights. Warren Buffett had recently offered to rescue a few very distressed lenders by backing a bunch of loans, but now the would-be hero has withdrawn the deal.

On Monday, Buffett said on television that his offer to guarantee $800 million in municipal bonds backed by MBIA (nyse: MBI - news - people ), Ambac Financial (nyse: ABK - news - people ) and privately owned Financial Guaranty Insurance, is no longer 'on the table.' (See 'Billionaires Pounce On Bond Insurers Stumble') Although his offer seemed like a much better deal for Buffett than the insurers, shares of the troubled companies weakened after he withdrew it. MBIA was down 37 cents, or 2.6%, to $12.60, during morning trading in New York. Ambac fell 34 cents, or 3.05%, $10.80.

Only 3 more days ...

I'm starting to get the bug to get back to bloggin', but I'll resist until Monday. Meanwhile, I couldn't resist posting this e-mail from John Rook because it's right on.

And so again, the in house newsletter of the Hagadone empire, The Coeur dAlene Press, demonstrates why the newspaper, like its publisher, lacks the respect of north Idahoans.

Always used to slant the news in favor of a Hagadone campaign, the Press has now invited its less than valid readership to vote on the top stories of this past year.

Of course, missing from the list is the passing of one of Idahos best known leaders, Ronald Rankin. His death in October leaves a huge vacancy that the Haga-Press can only hope will never be duplicated in the future. Rankin as a Kootenai county commissioner and as an ombudsman for the citizens of the county for dozens of years was never appreciated by Duane Hagadone or the editors of his newspaper as he often held their feet to the fire on issues vital to the public.

Interfax's Interview

Talks are an exact process. They require certain formulas and clarity: just as mathematics or physics. Subsequently, we asked to formalize these intentions in a form of a simple and clear proposal that the U.S. was ready to put forward. We waited for almost a month and a half. It is likely that this was the time required for the U.S. administration to adjust the wording and possibly to hold additional talks with partners. But what we finally saw lacked the elements that would have shown the U.S.s real readiness to not only hear, but also to listen to us.

It is likely that the Moscow proposals outran what the U.S. administration is really ready for.

One of the elements of the U.S. oral proposal was the permanent presence of Russian officers at missile defense facilities in the Czech Republic and Poland.

Plastic bag ban looms, but why?

Firstly, let's not forget that plastic bags are a serious environmental hazard. They are also symbolic of our throw-away society. It is not sustainable for us to treat our planet like a dustbin. By definition, because it is not sustainable, we have to change. I don't know what 'green groups' you are referring to, but the Green Party for one is not in favour of a ban on plastic bags. And the council do not have the power to ban them, or to enforce such a ban. The best way to reduce plastic bag use is to impose a small levy on their sale. That would require national legislation. This has been done in many countries. In Ireland, for example, it has reduced plastic bag sales by 95%. St Albans Green Party has been encouraging retailers to sign up to our Green Bag Zone, which aims to reduce plastic bag use.

Karen Acres

The first-graders at Karen Acres recently celebrated the 100th day of school. Did you know that a pound of Skittles includes more than 900 pieces of candy? Janine Choudhury's class counted by sets of 10 to find out.

Sexism, the Women’s Vote and Hillary Clinton’s Foreign Policy

You'll still be in Iraq in five years regardless who is president.

And it's all swings and roundabouts. You hate Clinton's foreign policy, which is not that different from Obama's; I hate Obama's domestic policy, which is very different. Clinton wants to fight Republicans for progressive policies; Obama wants to give them a big hug and hope they feel the love enough to allow him to bring in a few small changes.

Pillows, pills and potions

Your bedroom is for two things: for sleep and for sex, not necessarily in that order."

Morgan is more sceptical: "I don't subscribe to the idea that we live in an increasingly sleep-hostile environment," he says. "All you've got to do is read Engels' account of children sleeping in factories, or hear of agricultural workers in years gone by to see that. The electric light thing is interesting, but we tend not to build a world that's fully at odds with our biological heritage. Whether you look at the steps of a council flat or of a Roman temple, their height tends not to be beyond the extension of our stride."

Our peculiar relationship with sleep is, Morgan suggests, "an extension of our rather strange attitudes to our bodies. We've lost touch with our bodies. Living the right kind of life has become the target of the 21st century, and there are three principal pillars for health: diet, exercise and sleep.
