Madeleine McCann: What Shannon Matthews Is Worth, Asda And PR

Contrast the media-savvy McCann campaign with the brave efforts of Petra Jamieson, 30, a friend of Shannon's mother, who managed to persuade her local branch of Asda to donate 24 white T-shirts on which the girl's photograph had been printed.

What happened to Shannon Matthews? Who can we blame? The parents?

A deprived background, a dysfunctional family and a down-on-its-luck Yorkshire mill town: none of this is Shannon Matthews's fault, yet it seems that she is paying the price.

No holiday scene. No excuse for hacks to go to hotter climes. Yorkshire in winter. Grey. Grim.

The USA and Mexico: Election Fencing and Immigration

Today, some 44 of the sector's 66 miles (105.6 kilometers) are walled.

Mike Nicley, a retired border patrol chief who worked in San Diego when the fence was constructed, told ISN Security Watch that once they had built the fence, one section that remained open in the Low Tide Mesa area became a focal point for vehicle chasings, shootouts and other high levels of illegal cross-border activity.

And this is the core argument for those who oppose any form of border fence. The illegal immigrants will come, they say, independent of a walled segment. It's like placing a rock in the middle of a river. The flow will simply find another way around.

Some who argue in favor of a fence – or "increased border security" as careful politicians phrase the issue – insist that an actual physical barrier near urban areas makes sense, while a virtual fence in more rural areas is the best option.

Cashing in on pollution

The New Jersey landfill redevelopment deal has been more problematic. Plans stalled as Cherokee, state officials and politicians wrangled over who should fund the cleanup costs. New Jersey's inspector general is now investigating a Cherokee partner called EnCap Golf Holdings, and the state's Sierra Club branch says putting housing atop unstable landfills is a bad idea. "It's been an interesting learning experience," says Darden, who brought Trump into the deal last fall in hope of moving the project along.

Cherokee and Darden are also working to help rebuild New Orleans' Lower Ninth Ward with the actor Brad Pitt and the "green" architect William McDonough. Their joint project, called Make It Right, calls for building 150 affordable, environmentally-friendly homes.

Like all real estate firms, Cherokee has been affected by the subprime mortgage crisis, the resulting credit crunch and declining home prices.
